UAE used car VIN check: what to verify

A practical guide to checking a UAE used car VIN, understanding record gaps, and confirming identity before paying.

Practical guidance; verify vehicle-specific records and requirements with the relevant authority or qualified professional.

1. Match the vehicle identity

Compare the VIN shown on the vehicle with the registration card (Mulkiya) and any history report. Check more than one physical location if the manufacturer provides multiple VIN labels. If a number is unreadable, altered, or does not match the documents, pause the purchase and ask the relevant authority or a qualified inspection centre to verify it.

2. Use official records where available

Use the relevant emirate or federal police/transport authority service for the vehicle and record type. UAE services and the records they expose differ; check the authority’s current instructions. A search result is only as complete as its source and coverage. A clean result does not prove that the car has never been damaged.

3. Read the report as evidence, not a guarantee

Check the report date, VIN, source, and whether it covers this vehicle’s country of use. Look for recorded incidents, inspection or mileage entries, and gaps in dates. No entry means no record was returned by that source; it is not proof that an event did not happen. Compare mileage entries for a plausible sequence and ask for supporting service invoices.

4. Confirm the car in person

Compare the VIN on the car, its registration, and the seller’s authority to sell. Ask for available service records and the original market/specification. Have a qualified independent inspector assess structural repairs, mechanical condition, and diagnostic faults. A VIN lookup cannot assess the current condition of a car.

Before you pay

Resolve identity mismatches, unexplained mileage gaps, or missing ownership documents before paying a deposit. Confirm transfer requirements directly with the relevant authority. Keep copies of the report and seller’s written answers.
