Used car inspection: a safe buyer checklist

What a buyer can observe, what needs a qualified mechanic, and how to record findings before buying a used car in Dubai or the UAE.

Practical guidance; verify vehicle-specific records and requirements with the relevant authority or qualified professional.

1. Start with identity and paperwork

Match the VIN and registration details to the car. Ask for service invoices, available inspection records, and an explanation for gaps. Confirm the seller can complete the transfer. A passed registration inspection is not the same as a full mechanical assessment.

2. Make safe observations

In daylight, look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, cracked glass, warning lights, damaged tyres, water stains, and signs of leaks from a safe standing position. Check that doors, windows, lights, seat belts, and air conditioning operate. Do not crawl under a car, touch hot components, or perform a road test without permission and safe conditions.

3. Arrange an independent inspection

Before committing, ask a qualified independent mechanic to inspect the structure, suspension, brakes, tyres, fluids, cooling system, battery, and diagnostic codes as appropriate for the vehicle. Agree what the inspection includes and request written findings. A short viewing cannot reliably rule out hidden faults.

4. Test drive only when permitted and safe

With the owner’s permission and valid insurance/registration arrangements, drive on a suitable route. Notice warning lights, unusual noises, pulling, vibration, shifting, braking feel, and cooling or air-conditioning behavior. Do not attempt high-speed, emergency-braking, or off-road tests. Stop if a safety warning appears.

5. Record findings before deciding

Separate confirmed faults from questions and unknowns. Ask for repair invoices or a specialist opinion when evidence is unclear. Decide whether the seller will repair an issue before sale or whether you will walk away. Do not assume a fault has a standard repair cost; get a written estimate for this vehicle.
