How to negotiate a used car purchase in the UAE

A practical, evidence-led approach to discussing a used car asking price, repairs, and written terms.

Practical guidance; verify vehicle-specific records and requirements with the relevant authority or qualified professional.

1. Set your limit before contacting the seller

Decide your maximum total spend, including transfer, insurance, and any immediate work you have confirmed. Compare genuinely similar cars by year, trim, mileage, condition, and location. Asking prices are not proof of completed sale prices.

2. Ask specific questions

Ask why the seller is selling, what work is due, whether there are accident or repair records, and which features/specification are confirmed. Request documents or invoices for claims that matter to your decision. Keep questions neutral and written.

3. Negotiate from evidence

Use a written inspection finding or a quote for a needed repair to explain your offer. Separate urgent safety issues from maintenance and cosmetic preferences. Do not invent defects, claim a market value without comparable evidence, or assume the seller must accept a discount.

4. Put the agreement in writing

If you agree on a price or repair, record the amount, what will be done, by whom, and by when, alongside the vehicle identity. Confirm the transfer process with the relevant authority. Do not send money to an unverified person or rely on a verbal promise for a material condition.

5. Be ready to walk away

Pause if identity, ownership, payment recipient, or material condition cannot be verified. A polite no is safer than increasing your offer to overcome missing evidence. Recheck the car and documents before completing payment and transfer.
